The Ultimate Guide to Market Structure: Everything You Need to Succeed with Trading With The Edge

Most traders look at a chart and see noise. Professional traders look at a chart and see structure. Let's fix that.

Market structure is one of the simplest concepts in trading, but it is also one of the most important. If you can read structure clearly, you stop chasing random candles and start understanding what price is actually doing.

What Is Market Structure?

Market structure is the repeating pattern of highs and lows that tells you whether buyers or sellers are in control.

Think of it like this:

Bullish Market Structure

A bullish market usually prints:

  • HH = Higher High
  • HL = Higher Low

That means:

  • price pushes up to a new high
  • pulls back, but holds above the last low
  • then pushes up again

Simple diagram:

  • High
  • Pullback
  • Higher Low
  • New push
  • Higher High

If that pattern keeps repeating, buyers are in control.

Bearish Market Structure

A bearish market usually prints:

  • LH = Lower High
  • LL = Lower Low

That means:

  • price drops to a new low
  • bounces, but fails below the last high
  • then drops again

Simple diagram:

  • Low
  • Bounce
  • Lower High
  • New drop
  • Lower Low

If that pattern keeps repeating, sellers are in control.

The goal is not to overcomplicate it. Start by asking:

  • Are highs getting higher or lower?
  • Are lows getting higher or lower?
  • Is price trending, or just ranging?

If you can answer those three questions, you're already reading the chart better than most beginners.

BOS (Break of Structure)

A Break of Structure, or BOS, happens when price continues in the same direction and breaks an important swing point.

In an uptrend:

If price is making HH and HL, then a break above the previous Higher High is bullish BOS.

In a downtrend:

If price is making LH and LL, then a break below the previous Lower Low is bearish BOS.

Why this matters:

A BOS tells you the trend is still active. It is confirmation that the side in control is still pushing price.

Quick examples:

  • Bullish BOS: price makes HL, rallies, and breaks above the last HH
  • Bearish BOS: price makes LH, drops, and breaks below the last LL

This is trend continuation, not reversal.

A lot of traders enter too early because they assume a move is ready before structure confirms it. BOS helps you stop guessing.

CHoCH (Change of Character)

A Change of Character, or CHoCH, is different.

This is the market giving you an early warning that the current trend may be weakening or reversing.

Example in an uptrend:

If price has been making HH and HL, but then drops and breaks below the most recent Higher Low, that can be a bearish CHoCH.

Example in a downtrend:

If price has been making LH and LL, but then rallies and breaks above the most recent Lower High, that can be a bullish CHoCH.

That does not always mean a full reversal is guaranteed.

It means the market just did something different than what it had been doing.

That is why CHoCH matters. It alerts you to pay attention.

A simple way to remember it:

  • BOS = continuation
  • CHoCH = possible shift

Order Flow & Breaker Blocks

Once you understand structure, the next step is learning how price reacts around important zones.

This is where order flow and breaker blocks come in.

Order flow is simply the story of pressure:

  • Are buyers stepping in with strength?
  • Are sellers defending levels?
  • Is price accepting higher prices or lower prices?

A breaker block forms when a key level gets broken and then changes role.

One of the easiest ways to think about it:

  • old resistance can become new support
  • old supply can become new demand
  • old demand can become new supply

Example:

Imagine price is in a downtrend. It leaves behind a bearish zone and keeps falling. Later, price rallies, breaks that structure, and starts shifting bullish. When price comes back to that old bearish zone and respects it as support, that area can act like a breaker block.

Why traders care:

  • it gives context
  • it shows where strong reactions may happen
  • it helps connect structure to actual trade locations

Breaker blocks are not magic boxes. They work best when they line up with clear structure, not when they are marked randomly all over the chart.

How the Scanners Help You See This in Real-Time

Learning structure on old charts is useful. Seeing it live is where traders usually struggle.

That is where the scanners come in.

The Edge Scanner

The Edge Scanner helps identify the structural context. In plain English, it helps you understand whether the market is currently behaving like:

  • HH / HL
  • LH / LL
  • transition
  • consolidation

Instead of staring at a chart trying to talk yourself into a bias, you get help seeing the actual condition of the market.

The Razor Scanner

The Razor Scanner helps with timing.

Once the structural context is clear, the Razor Scanner helps you spot the moments where BOS or CHoCH may be turning into real opportunities to execute.

That means:

  • less random clicking
  • less emotional guessing
  • more alignment between structure and entries

Together, the scanners turn market structure from theory into execution.

When You Get Stuck

It’s 2:14 AM.

You’re staring at a breaker block and you’re not sure if what you’re seeing is a BOS or a CHoCH.

That is exactly when traders usually spiral:

  • overthink the setup
  • force an entry
  • or freeze and miss the move

Don’t get stuck.
